Introduction and Learning Objectives: D&I purpose, indications, and module roadmap

Lesson Summary

Dr. Chris Lopez, along with Dr. Julie Fan and the OD on Education team, are excited to present the first-ever dilation and irrigation (D&I) master class. This class is part of a broader procedural master class series designed to deepen understanding and skills in various optometric procedures.

The main goal is to help optometrists across the country enhance their diagnostic abilities and clinical skills to provide better patient care, particularly for those dealing with ocular surface complaints.

Target Audience:

  • Optometrists (ODS) of all experience levels—new graduates, seasoned practitioners, practice owners, and associates.
  • Those managing patients with epiphora (excessive tearing), dry eye, ocular surface disease, and nasolacrimal system dysfunction.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Identify appropriate indications and contraindications for performing dilation and irrigation procedures.
  • Apply knowledge of the nasal lacrimal anatomy to improve clinical decision-making.
  • Perform dilation and irrigation safely and confidently.
  • Interpret irrigation findings accurately and integrate these results into patient treatment plans.
  • Document procedures properly, including correct use of ICD-10 and CPT codes to ensure appropriate reimbursement.

Important Reminder: Before performing any nasolacrimal system procedures, practitioners must verify that the procedure is within their scope of practice according to their state's regulations.

Thank you for watching the introductory video. Stay tuned for subsequent videos that will further explore dilation and irrigation techniques and applications.
